I must admit that this was one of the weirdest conversations that I have ever had. So random. There we were, two strangers in a little store near what seemed like an eternal dirt road. We were happy to see someone, anyone. A fellow traveler who could relate to being here in the now.

"So what brings you here?" she asked, relating to me like an old friend. I opened the store refrigerator and let her have the last chilled drink flavour we both wanted before reaching for something else, fortunately just as cold.

"I guess I just wanted to get away to hear my thoughts and reflect... I'm a travel blogger," I said. Naturally sensing that I was just as curious, without me having to ask, she volunteered the answer. "That's great, this is the perfect route to get away," she giggled. We both did.

"I'm a pet sitter," she said. "A what?" I asked. "A pet sitter. I travel around and live rent-free watching other people's pets and homes. Cool part is that I can pretty much visit anywhere I want without having to cough out accommodation costs," she continued.

I knew right there and then that there were infinitely more ways to travel than I had ever imagined. During the conversation, she clarified that she does not have any special skills to teach misbehaving pets to behave or any pet hypnotic abilities. She pretty much just takes care of pets and in turn gets rewarded by living rent-free, amongst other perks.

- So that was how I initially heard about pet/home sitters who travel rent-free anywhere in the world. If you would like to travel to snowy dreamlands, tropical islands, first and third worlds (and anything in between) looking after other people's pets and/or homes, then HouseCarers.com is something that may be of great interest to you.
